Why Hasn’t There Been a Good Black Christmas Movie After 1974?
Black Christmas is an instant classic. It was probably the first horror movie to define the great twist of realizing that the creepy phone calls were coming from inside the house! It is a very simple story, featuring a young woman who is part of a sorority house, who dreams of moving forward with her life.
She becomes the final girl of the film when she comes to the conclusion that her friends are getting killed by one by one by the killer who lives in the attic of the home.
The killer himself is scary as hell. He remains ambiguous through the entirety of the film, his kills are horrific and brutal, and the small snippets the viewer and the victims get from his backstory is so disturbing; this killer is very sick.
The story sounds pretty good, right?
A nice classic horror movie that started off the home invasion future films with a bang. Unfortunately, the next two films didn’t exactly hit the mark. I don’t know why, but the next two directors and the writers failed to produce a fantastic follow up to its predecessor. Black Christmas sounds like an easy story that can go in any direction, but the next two films’ stories were terribly executed and downright stupid.
It’s alright to remake a film in your own image, but don’t make it sound like a ten-year-old wrote it. However, and this sounds really sad, I think a ten-year-old could do a much better job.
Black Christmas 2006
Black Christmas 2006 is incredibly stupid. I don’t know what went wrong. The story is pretty much the same, but the reveal of the killer…extremely poor. The killer was of course the original 1974 version, Billy. Yet, for some strange reason, the film decided to reveal a much sicker backstory of how Billy became a killer.
Instead of coming off very eerie and horrific, I cringed and became disgusted/annoyed. What made the killer very scary in the 1974 version, is that you don’t know the full backstory. He is a mystery killer, who supposedly had a sister named Agnes that he cared about a little too much. In this version, Agnes and Billy are duo killers, which is a cool idea…but the new backstory to this 2006 relationship between the siblings was obviously done for just shock value.
Sometimes, I can’t even believe this movie exists. Don’t watch it. You’ll get bored really quickly, and you will feel confused and sick over the stupid reveal of Billy’s backstory.
Black Christmas 2019
I was so excited for the new remake of Black Christmas, believing it was finally going to get the justice it deserves. Instead, I was met with another disappointment. Black Christmas 2019 is another stupid film, with another dumb plot that was changed wayyy too much.
Sure, go for originality, it’s considered a remake for a reason, but damn, this was not a homerun. It follows the same sorority house plot, with a cult thrown in. I didn’t expect the story to be changed that drastically. I was expecting all of the girls to be final girls, since the poster kept hinting all the girls were gonna go head-to-head with Billy from the original Black Christmas.
Great idea, something new, but the cult idea for the new one was done so bad.
I understood the message that the director was going for, the director wanted to show the audience just how strong women can be when coming together from horrible trauma inflicted upon them by men, but it wasn’t good at all. It came off very annoying, and the worst part was that this new one decided to take a supernatural approach with the cult.
This was a bad idea from the start, and where the hell was Billy in all this? He at least should have been the leader of the cult, but there was no mention of him whatsoever. The film also left too many plot holes up in the air.
- How did the cult get away with all this in modern times?
- How did they remain underground for so long?
- Did the cops ever suspect the cult’s existence?
It’s not a good idea, and wow, I wasn’t sure which remake was worse. It makes me sad that Black Christmas 1974 hasn’t been given a proper remake. Perhaps this film should be left alone from now on. It’s a great film by itself, and the concept of the killer being inside the house is a really excellent idea of providing enough scares and terror for their audience. Go watch Black Christmas 1974. Don’t watch the last two remakes. If you want to get bored or make fun of either movie, then watch them.
Black Christmas 1974 is the only good one, that is a great example of how scary an invasion of someone in your home can feel like.
