Why The Black Phone is a Great Horror Movie

The Black Phone is a wonderful horror tale, with so much horror stories mixed into one.

  • Crime
  • Supernatural
  • Psychic powers
  • Serial killer
  • Scary moments
The way The Black Phone was done was perfect. I don't normally say this for a horror movie, but this movie was a great mystery. Nothing was ever truly explained in this story. Everything was just happening, but in an odd way; it worked for the film. I think the director purposely took this route, because since it took place in the 70s, who is going to understand what is truly happening?

I think the point of the movie was that it was done on purpose to be confusing. Just like the main kid who is determined to escape from The Grabber, we are placed in his shoes; trying to figure out what is going on around him. It's a nice original spin, and I have to appreciate the director for taking such a risk. Horror is all about taking risks after all, and Scott Derrickson understood the assignment!

One huge example was The Grabber's character. What made him so creepy, was that we never got to learn anything about him. All we knew, is that his victim target was children...but the fact that we never got to learn what happened to them, or who he was as a person...is freaking scary.

It didn't help the creepiness, since he wore different kinds of masks to portray all of his emotions. It's such a good concept, and I felt so bad for all those kids who were stuck with this monster.

To make a long story short, The Black Phone plays well with ambiguity. Not explaining everything is what really made this film memorable and great!
