The Substance follows the story of a woman named Elisabeth Sparkle, who is now turning 50 years old. She appears to be living her best life. She is a fitness instructor for a TV show, she is beautiful and rich. Then her boss decides to kick her out of the studio, for a younger woman that will take the place of Elisabeth. How to Write Psychological Horror Stories

Writing horror can be tough, but it can sometimes be a great challenge to explore! Psychological horror is one of my personal favorites when it comes to writing horror stories.

What makes this genre fun is the use of your characters in these types of stories! I mostly like to use first person point of view, because it does make it a little easier for me to play with this kind of horror!

Focusing on the main character’s mind can really make your story blossom with the use of horror! There are a number of elements that you can use with your character to stand out in your story:

  • You could use your character as an unreliable narrator to confuse your readers and provide a sort of tension.
  • You can explore the madness and terror of your character’s mind; you could use other characters to make the character believe they are being taunted!
  • You can use crazy descriptions of what the character believes they are witnessing; body horror would be the perfect genre to use here!

From personal experience, this is what I have done in several of my stories. It’s a really neat experiment to work with, and it’s how I learned how to challenge myself through my writing.

Writing psychological horror is pretty entertaining, because it gives you the chance to learn how to tackle your main character’s mind in your story!
