Suspiria (2018) is a Grisly and Beautiful Horror Tale that Follows the Birth of a Powerful Witch

I remember the first time I had seen this movie. I was a freshman in college, that was upset that I couldn’t watch this movie in theaters.
Eventually, I was able to finally check it out on a streaming service, and I was blown away. At first, I was traumatized for quite a long time. I had to leave my dorm to go for a long walk.
Then I found myself watching the movie multiple times throughout the years. I realized several years later that the remake to Suspiria is now one of my favorite horror movies ever made.
I will be going over the main storyline to this film, since we actually follow about four points of view in this movie!
The story follows a young woman named Susie who is determined to become part of a dancing company. Ever since she was a child, it appeared that she was always drawn to this place.
She is immediately accepted into the company when the directors of the company come to realize that Susie has quite a bit of talent.
However…that’s not exactly the reason why the directors are interested in Susie.
The company is owned by a coven of witches who are determined to complete a ritual.

I’m just going to say this right now…these are probably the most deadly and dangerous witches I have ever seen in a horror movie. They are intelligent, wicked, and are willing to do anything to complete their mission.
The witches are searching for the perfect girl to use for a ritual, to summon a witch known as Mother Suspirorum. She is a special witch that is one of the most powerful witches out of three.
The witches truly believe that Susie possesses enough power through her dance moves to finally bring to life the witch they have been searching for.
What’s so sad about this realization, is that the witches are obviously evil, and they had to choose which girls would become a part of their ritual. When I say that they suffer throughout the entire film…it’s freaking brutal.
One girl gets her leg broken and is forced to endure the pain while she is under a spell.
One girl gets her body completely twisted up and is still alive…
One girl appears to be held against her will at the company, resembling a rotting corpse.
Then these girls are tortured while under the coven’s spell…I can’t say how, because it’s extremely graphic. These witches were pure evil, I couldn’t believe each of their actions throughout the film!
The ending is uh…batshit insane.

Before the ritual can be completed at the end of the film, Susie is revealed to be Mother Suspirorum. She summons a demon to kill any witch that opposed a witch she formed a bond with, and becomes the leader to now lead the company.
The finale is explosive, gory as hell, and is pretty graphic. I don’t think I have ever seen a finale this dark before, but at the same time, it was kind of beautiful.
Kinda like Susie that kept repeating that the dancing was beautiful during the ritual, when she watches the girls at the company dance over the dead bodies.
Out of context, that sounds freaking weird.
There is so much more to this film that needs to be talked about. Maybe I will eventually, since this film follows about four points of view. It’s quite an extraordinary film, and I can see how horror fans love this movie.
It’s a shame that the director to the original film wasn’t a fan of this movie. I have watched both versions, and I have to say that the remake is my absolute favorite.
It explores so much more, and we get a better feel for the entire cast. Also, this film has the balls to end with a bad ending, and I have to respect the director for taking a risk like this.
Suspiria (2018) is not for everyone, but it’s an artful film that deserves so much more love from horror fans!
