The Lost Boys is an Excellent 80s Classic that Follows the Old School Rules of Vampires

Warning: Will contain major spoilers for The Lost Boys.

I am a huge fan of vampires. They are one of the best old school creatures of the night, and if executed right, they can be downright terrifying bastards. The Lost Boys definitely delivers on the scare factor of vampires.

The story follows a kid named Michael, who is starting fresh in the small town of Santa Carla, with his brother, Sam, and his mother. They go to live with their grandpa, who is quite the eccentric character.

Michael and Sam begin to explore the town during the night, enjoying the crazy festivities taking place in a carnival. Little do the brothers know that something isn’t wrong in Santa Carla.

There is a string of strange deaths occurring during the night, where people are literally snatched into the sky, to never be seen again.

What exactly is killing these people?

Michael ends up learning the hard truth when he falls for a beautiful girl, only to stumble upon a group of blood sucking vampires.

Michael is tricked into becoming a vampire, when he decides to hang out with this strange group of kids.

Michael decides to hang out with these rebellious kids, whether to look cool in front of his love interest, or to befriend this group, he ends up paying the price.

When he is offered a wine bottle to drink to impress the group, he doesn’t hesitate. He comes to the horrible conclusion that he is now a creature of the night, and must find a way to cure his dark disease before it’s too late.

Luckily, help is on the way, when his little brother meets two kids who claim to be vampire hunters.

Even though they don’t meet eye to eye with Michael being a vampire, they agree to team up with Sam to help him take down the vampires once and for all. There is only one problem with their mission:

They need to kill the head vampire to save Michael.

Michael leads the vampire hunters to the cave where he first David, the leader of the group, and the rest of the vampires.

While Michael saves his love interest and a little boy, Sam and his allies head out to take down the vampires.

Unfortunately, they are only able to take one vampire down, and David promises to go after the others as revenge.

The ending climax is an entertaining battle royale between vampires and humans.

Michael and his new team all work together to kill David and his group of vampires. It turns into a bloody gore fest as the team continues to take down each vampire one by one.

I wasn’t expecting the practical effects to be that gory and disgusting; it was so unexpected, and I loved how the film didn’t hold back on these deaths!

I also loved that great twist I didn’t see coming toward the ending of the film. After watching it several more times, I realized that the twist was right in front of me the whole time.

It was a great slow burn, and there were multiple hints of someone else being the head vampire of this monster group!

Remember how I mentioned that Michael and Sam came to live in Santa Carla with their mother?

She was actually one of the main characters in this film, that was constantly frustrated with having to deal with her two sons experiencing trouble in the town.

She assumed that they were just acting up, but realizes the truth when she finds out that the man she was dating was actually the head vampire the whole time. I loved the number of hints we got with him being the leader.

1. He asked Michael if he could be invited into his home.

2. He didn’t seem that thrilled to see David and his crew show up to his store, and I was surprised when they didn’t kill him.

3. David and his crew pay the head vampire a visit, but he doesn’t get killed.

4. His dog was fiercely protective of him during the day. (The dog was hinted to be a hound of hell that protected the vampire).

This twist was excellent, and it made the film so much better for me as a fan of vampires in horror. I loved how The Lost Boys followed the old school trope of vampires; it made the film so much better!

The Lost Boys is a great horror film, and is one of my favorite horror movies to watch during the spooky season!
